John J. Green is a professor at Mississippi State University, where he teaches in the Department of Agricultural Economics and as an affiliated faculty member of the Department of Sociology. He is director of the Southern Rural Development Center, an organization focused on building capacity among the 30 land-grant institutions located in a 13-state region. Before joining Mississippi State, Green served as director of the Center for Population Studies and as a professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Mississippi. Earlier in his career, he worked at Delta State.

Green is past president of the Rural Sociological Society and of the Southern Rural Sociological Association, a past chair of the Rural Population Research Network, and part of the current leadership team for the Interdisciplinary Network on Rural Population Health and Aging. He serves as editor of the Journal of Rural Social Sciences and is former editor of Community Development.

His current areas of scholarly research and applied extension activities include regional approaches to socioeconomic development, population change, community engagement strategies to inform development policy, and models of collaboration across institutional and state boundaries.

Green holds a Ph.D. in rural sociology from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
