Ryan Parsons’ research interests include the relationship between geographic mobility and social mobility, the stratification consequences or rural-to-urban migration, and the public policy consequences of rural population decline. Recent projects include ethnographic studies of young, rural Black college aspirants in the Mississippi Delta, multi-sited studies of Social Security disability programs, and urbanization patterns in rural China. His work appears or is forthcoming in Surveillance & Society, RSF: The Russell Sage Foundation Journal of the Social Sciences, The American Sociologist, and other venues.

As an assistant professor of sociology and Southern studies at the University of Mississippi, Parsons teaches courses related to poverty, inequality and mobility, with a special focus on the American South.

He holds a Ph.D. in sociology and social policy from Princeton University.
