Register Now for the 2024 Community Banking Research Conference, Oct. 2-3

Community bankers, academics, policymakers and bank supervisors will meet Oct. 2-3 for the 12th annual Community Banking Research Conference in-person at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. The event also will be livestreamed. 

The conference is co-sponsored by the Federal Reserve System, the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC). 

This year’s notable speakers include:

  • Alberto G. Musalem, president and CEO, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, at 9:05 a.m. CT on Oct. 2
  • Charlie Clark, director, Washington State Department of Financial Institutions, and chair, CSBS, at 9:15 a.m. CT on Oct. 2
  • Michelle Bowman, member, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, at 10 a.m. CT on Oct. 2
  • Martin Gruenberg, chairman, FDIC, at 1:30 p.m. CT on Oct. 2
  • Elizabeth Magennis, president, ConnectOne Bank, Englewood Cliffs, N.J., at 8:30 a.m. CT on Oct. 3 

2024 CSBS Annual Survey of Community Banks

Results of the 2024 CSBS Annual Survey of Community Banks will be presented at 9:30 a.m. CT on Oct. 2. Since 2014, the survey has provided insights into the opportunities and challenges that banks faced during the previous year.

2024 CSBS Case Study Competition

Commonwealth University in Mansfield, Pa., is the winning team of this year’s CSBS Community Bank Case Study Competition. The team will present at 4 p.m. CT on Oct. 2. This year, student teams partnered with local community banks to explore topics related to 2023 bank failures, including expected regulatory and supervisory changes, as well as how banks are using social media. 

Research Paper Sessions, Moderators and Discussants

Nine academic papers were selected to be presented at this year’s conference. Authors of the selected papers will present during one of three moderated panels being held throughout the conference.

The first session and panel, “Community Banks and the Local Economy,” will be moderated by Greg Nini, associate professor of finance at the LeBow College of Business, Drexel University. The community bank discussant will be T. Corey Neil, president and CEO of the Bank of Tampa in Tampa, Fla.

The second session and panel, “Deposit Stability,” will be moderated by Matthew Plosser, financial research advisor at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The community bank discussant will be Mary Willis, president and CEO of Fidelity Bank in Fuquay-Varina, N.C. 

The third session and panel, “Consumer Protection,” will be moderated by Anne Beatty, Deloitte & Touche Chair of Accounting at the Fisher College of Business, The Ohio State University. The community bank discussant will be Orvin “Orv” Kimbrough, chairman and CEO of Midwest BankCentre in St. Louis.

Two additional papers were identified and will be featured online and as poster presentations at the conference. A list of all papers and the complete agenda can be found on the conference website.
