Sign Up for the 2021 Community Banking Research Conference, Sept. 28-29

ST. LOUIS ― An internationally represented group of community bankers, academics, policymakers and bank supervisors will meet virtually the afternoons of Sept. 28 and 29 for the ninth annual Community Banking in the 21st Century research and policy conference.

The conference is co-sponsored by the Federal Reserve System, the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC). The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis will host the conference via WebEx. The proceedings also will be livestreamed on communitybanking.org.

This year’s keynote speakers include:

  • Michelle Bowman, governor, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, at 1:40 p.m. ET on Sept. 28
  • Jelena McWilliams, chairman, FDIC, at 3:25 p.m. ET on Sept. 28
  • Darrin Williams, CEO, Southern Bancorp Inc., at 1 p.m. ET on Sept. 29

2021 CSBS National Survey of Community Banks

The first day of the conference will kick off with the results of the 2021 CSBS National Survey of Community Banks. Since 2014, the national survey has provided insights into the opportunities and challenges that banks faced during the previous year.

Panel Discussion: Future of Commercial Real Estate

At 3:10 p.m. ET on the second day of the conference, a panel discussion moderated by The FDIC Podcast host Brian Sullivan will delve into the future of commercial real estate. The panelists will include:

  • John Buren, president and CEO, Flushing Bank, Uniondale, N.Y.
  • Robert DiChiara, regional manager for the division of insurance and research, FDIC
  • Jim Edwards, CEO, United Bank, Griffin, Ga.
  • Joanne Kim, president and CEO, Commonwealth Business Bank, Los Angeles

2021 CSBS Case Study Presentation

The winning team of this year’s CSBS Community Bank Case Study Competition, the University of Tennessee at Martin, will present its findings on the second day of the conference. This year’s topic focused on how community banks navigated the COVID-19 pandemic and how they encouraged greater diversity and inclusion.
