2019 Community Banking Research Conference to be Webcast Live Oct. 1-2

ST. LOUIS – Community bankers, academics, policymakers and bank supervisors from across the country will meet Oct. 1-2 at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis for the seventh annual Community Banking in the 21^st Century research and policy conference. The conference features the latest in community banking research and will be webcast live throughout both days.

It is sponsored by the Federal Reserve System, the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC). 

Featured speakers will include:

• Federal Reserve Governor Michelle Bowman, who will give the opening keynote at 8:30 a.m. CT on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
• FDIC Chairman Jelena McWilliams, who will give the afternoon keynote starting at 11:30 a.m. CT on Oct. 1.
• Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia President Patrick Harker, who will give the second day keynote at 8 a.m. CT on Wednesday, Oct. 2.

Other Speakers

Julieann Thurlow, president and CEO of Reading Cooperative Bank, Reading, Mass., will deliver the community banker evening keynote address at 7 p.m. CT on Oct. 1.

Other guest speakers will include Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis President James Bullard and CSBS President and CEO John Ryan.

Research Paper Sessions, Moderators and Discussants

Twelve academic papers were chosen from this year's call for papers by the conference committee. Authors of the selected papers will present their research during one of four moderated panels held throughout the conference. The panel sessions are divided into four topic areas, with each panel including a community banker discussant and an academic moderator.

• The first research session and panel will focus on small business lending. The moderator will be Diane Ellis, director, Division of Insurance and Research, FDIC. The community banker discussant will be Lori Maley, president and CEO, Bank of Bird-in-Hand, Bird-in-Hand, Pa.
• The second session and panel, on the topic of local shocks and spillover effects, will be moderated by Thomas Siems, senior economist and director of research, CSBS. The community banker discussant will be Gary Petersen, chairman of Cornerstone Bank, New Town, N.D.
• The third session and panel, on the topic of responses to changes in regulation or supervision, will be moderated by Michael Gibson, director, Division of Supervision and Regulation, Federal Reserve Board of Governors. The community bank discussant will be Craig Goodlock, chairman and CEO, Farmers State Bank of Munith, Munith, Mich.
• The fourth session and panel, on the topic of technology and banking, will be moderated by Traci Mach, principal economist at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. The community banker discussant will be Michael Busch, president and CEO of Burling Bank, Chicago.

CSBS National Survey of Community Banks

On the first day of the conference, the 2019 CSBS National Survey of Community Banks will be released and discussed.

CSBS Community Bank Case Study Winners

This year’s conference also will feature a presentation and video from students at Juniata College, the winners of the 2019 CSBS Community Bank Case Study Competition.
