A panel of economists and other experts—some homeowners, some renters—talked about other aspects of homeownership: whether it’s a better investment than stocks, its popularity in rural areas vs. urban areas, global trends, the need for less-expensive housing, and more. The panelists are Don Schlagenhauf, chief economist at the Center for Household Financial Stability; Carlos Garriga, an economist in the Research Division who studies housing markets and finance; and Daniel Davis, senior manager of the St. Louis Fed’s Community Development department. The discussion was moderated by Julie Stackhouse, head of the Supervision Division.
