A panel of economists and other experts — some homeowners, some renters — talked about other aspects of homeownership: whether it’s a better investment than stocks, its popularity in rural areas vs. urban areas, global trends, the need for less-expensive housing, and more.

The St. Louis Fed panelists were Don Schlagenhauf, chief economist at the Center for Household Financial Stability; Carlos Garriga, a research economist who studies housing markets and finance; and Daniel Davis of Community Development. The discussion was moderated by Julie Stackhouse, head of the Supervision division.
