Summary:
The FSOC seeks comment on proposed recommendations to the SEC to address the structural vulnerabilities of money market mutual funds. The proposed recommendations target activities and practices of money market mutual funds that make them vulnerable to destabilizing runs: (i) The lack of explicit loss-absorption capacity in the event of a drop in the value of a security held by money market mutual funds and (ii) the first-mover advantage that provides an incentive for investors to redeem their shares at the first indication of any perceived threat to a money market mutual fund’s value or liquidity. The original comment end date was January 18, 2013. On January 18, the FSOC extended the comment period to February 15, 2013 (78 FR 4145).
