The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Economic Education department requests proposals for concurrent session presentations at its 2019 Annual Professors Conference: The Art and Science of Teaching Economics.
The conference will begin at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, and conclude at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15. It includes a reception on Thursday evening and breakfast and lunch on Friday. The conference is free, but all presenters must be registered. Presenters are responsible for their own transportation and accommodations.
Concurrent sessions are 75 minutes in length with three presenters assigned to each session. Please plan on limiting your presentation to 20 minutes, which will allow 20 minutes for each of the other presentations, and for 15 minutes at the end for questions from the audience.
Audiovisual equipment (a screen, projector, computer, and sound) will be provided in each room. The number of conference attendees typically is 100.
While teaching strategies have evolved over time, in many college classrooms, instruction rests on a method of student engagement developed by Socrates during the Golden Age of Athens. Of course, students, professors, the curriculum, and the labor market have all changed dramatically since the fifth century B.C. But, change for the sake of change is never advised. This year’s conference will consider the important elements of instruction, while remembering that effective teaching is both art and science.
