Cletus C. Coughlin
Senior Vice President and Policy Adviser to the President
Cletus C. Coughlin is senior vice president and chief of staff to the president at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. He received a bachelor of business administration in accounting and economics from the University of Iowa in 1974 and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of North Carolina in 1981. Mr. Coughlin's principal research interests are international economics and regional economics. His research has been published in leading peer reviewed journals and the St. Louis Fed's Review.
Mr. Coughlin joined the Bank as a senior economist in 1987, was promoted to vice president in 1994 and served as the deputy director in the Research Division prior to assuming his current position in July 2011. He has held faculty positions at Drake University and the University of Georgia, adjunct faculty positions at Saint Louis University and Washington University in St. Louis, and visiting positions at City University in London and Erasmus University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He is a policy associate with the Leverhulme Centre for Research on Globalisation and Economic Policy at the University of Nottingham in Nottingham, England. In addition, he serves on the editorial board of the Review of Regional Science.
