The Fed now offers financial institutions the ability to submit one of their reports through the Internet--representing the first application to begin migrating to the online environment.
All institutions that complete the FR2900 "Report of Transaction Accounts, Other Deposits and Vault Cash" can file it electronically via the Internet. About 15 financial institutions have been taking advantage of this convenient filing method since it became available in April.
"This option is a convenient, secure and cost-effective alternative for
electronic data reporting," said Frank Bufe, manager of the Statistics Department at the St. Louis Fed. "Over time, we expect to introduce the Internet option for additional reports."
Bufe said the Fed is initially recruiting those who are completing this report manually; handwritten and faxed reports are telltale signs that a financial institution would be a prime candidate for using this new electronic
data reporting service.
The Fed designed a specialized web site for filing this report, which Bufe believes offers several advantages. For example, the system performs mathematical edits to ensure accurate data and provides receipts showing the date and time of data submission. It also accommodates both users who report for more than one depository institution and those who cross District lines.
